Proposed Statement
for the Reed-Hill
Cemetery Memorial
January 10, 1999
HISTORY
The Reed-Hill Cemetery was started (established) in 1856 with the interment of Dr. Calvin
C. Reed. This family burial ground was donated by Reed's son-in-law, Fleming R. Hill at
the time of Reed's death, Calvin was a wagon master and the doctor on a train of some
sixty wagons that arrived in Oregon in 1850. Calvin and his wife, Alvira, had nine
children. Five are buried in this cemetery and the others in Yoncalla, Drain, Myrtle Point
and Washington State. The Reed's and their extended families were among the early settlers
of the Umpqua Valley and were major contributors to the development of the region. Many
present day descendants of the various family groups still live in the area and are active
in the affairs of the community. Those in the area and elsewhere have shown an increasing
interest in using and perpetuating this heritage.
